Description

One thing I've noticed when browsing around the various kaiju artist profiles on dA is that everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, has at least one dinosaur kaiju, specifically at least one theropod kaiju. Who can blame them, what with everyone's favorite atomic dino, Gojira/Godzilla, having been around since like what, the 50's or something? To be quite honest, however, while I like T-rex very much, I feel that using Rex as a basis for a kaiju is becoming very common, almost cliche. *RenDragonClaw was willing to take the time to discuss the whole matter a while ago, and according to his analysis, theropod kaiju fall under several stereotypes: 1) being based off T-rex or some other big theropod; 2) being the most powerful and dominant monster of their respective kaijuverse; and 3) they either look similar to Godzilla or an actual theropod of some kind, usually with lots of spikes and frills to make them look distinctive.
Now, I know lots of kaiju creators tend to "follow the leader", so to speak. I, however, am loathe to try using a big theropod as a basis for my obligatory theropod kaiju. After all, I've got a thing for monsters that are FAST. This of course makes the "Modern Rex" type the most likely alternative. However, I had a hard time trying to find a way to make it ORIGINAL. I once tried making a Ceratosaurus kaiju, with all the conformity that it implies. I did like the end result, but it somehow didn't sit well with me, so I may save that for a different kaiju-related storyline than the main one I'm doing. The solution came to me after looking up an article about scientists trying to genetically engineer a chicken to look like a dinosaur. I wondered to myself, "What would happen if that thing was as tall as an apartment building?" Also, the closest relatives of birds were dromaeosaurs, or "raptors," which are my favorite true dinosaurs. The result was a gigantic hybrid of chicken and Velociraptor with some Cockatrice thrown in for good measure, with all the silliness/awesomeness that it implies. At least he has an awesome name, Poultrasaurus. I don't know how powerful he is, but despite being the "main" monster of this half of my kaijuverse, he is based on one of the smaller predators so he's not as physically powerful as some of the other monsters I plan to make, but he's still fast and deadly as raptors are often portrayed, which also works well in a world full of dangerous skyscraper-sized behemoths that would level a city just for the hell of it.
I added the egg and the chick down there because I always imagined him as being the "king chicken" of a whole swarm of giant dinochickens, to the point where he lays all the eggs. Fridge Logic much? Of course, Zilla was also hermaphroditic, so from my standpoint, anything goes.

You may think that Poultrasaurus may seem out of place in a kaijuverse with monsters based on the Zodiac like I tried to do in my old account (and like I will do on this one too). However, he is but the first the first of a long string of monsters based on the Chinese Zodiac, as opposed to the Celestial Court's Western one. Being Asian-American and born under the year of the Rooster, I suppose it makes perfect sense.
