As those of you who're keeping track of the UCA probably know by know, the HELL IN A CELL Melee tournament is on. *eats popcorn* Well, at least the intros have all been posted. Since I happen to be the guy behind one of the kaiju participating, I figured I might as well induct said kaiju into KK, something which I've always wanted ever since he was first drawn.
The original idea for Mathayus, the Oceanic Acid and the Scorpio sign of my Zodiac kaiju roster, was actually inspired by a design I saw in a book on drawing mechas. It was a crustacean-like submersible thing, with four pincer-arms and a long blade-tipped tail for swimming. While looking at it again I wondered what the design would look like as an organic thing; crustaceans were a good place to start but in truth the first thing I thought of when I looked at that mecha was a sea scorpion. Once I combined aspects of scorpions, eurypterids, and the aforementioned mecha, I realized that I liked the design so much that making it canon was inevitable. The name actually comes from a character from a movie I have on DVD at home, The Mummy Returns, which as far as I know has absolutely nothing to do with sea creatures; I just picked the name because Mathayus referred to the so-called Scorpion King, and anyway it just sounds cool.
Despite having only been drawn, oh, twice (the first time being the sketch above, dated from 2010), the Oceanic Acid has always been one of my personal favorite creations, and he's definitely going to remain in the UCA for a really long time. As for his place in KK, he will most likely appear as a supporting antagonist and a very dangerous one at that, second only to the mystery Big Bad in terms of physical power and earning first prize in terms of both lack of redeeming traits and sheer destructive capability. I've always thought of him as KK's equivalent to Destoroyah: Always Chaotic Evil, hell-bent on destroying everything standing in his way, and of course, the classic double whammy of being both utterly soulless and batshit insane.

I like him, his design is unique. The kaiju genre needs some scorpions monsters.
